YF-23 Inboard Views
Now available are scans of two large and detailed diagrams of the Northrop YF-23 stealth fighter. Included:

1) Drawing 400L005002, sheet 1 of 2: provides top, bottom, left and right inboard views, with scrap inboard views through the engine and upper avionics bay. An impressive 27,000 by 7032 pixels, black & white. Original scan was missing much of the title block, but the rest of the image is intact.

2) Drawing 400L005002, sheet 2 of 2: provides 21 cross-sections of the YF-23. Smaller than sheet one, it's still a large 17,696 by 6,944 pixels, black and white.

Also included are grayscale half- and quarter-size versions for easier viewing and printing. Together these would make a very useful resource for model builders... either to perfect a kit, or to scratchbuilt a large-scale display or even RC flying model.

733-197 SST blueprint
Drawn in late 1963, this large diagram shows the Boeing Model 733-197 swing-wing SST. Top and side views are complemented by a number of cross-sections, as well as geometric, weight and payload data. Listed as drawing number 65-38350, this drawing set includes four versions:

1. The full-size drawing, 15875X7181 pixels.
2. A halfsize version.
3. A quartersize version
4. And a 2210X1000 pixel "blueprint" version.

A great deal of work went into cleaning up this drawing from its original state, and the end result is an impressive diagram of an impressive, though ultimately doomed-to-never-be-built aircraft.

McDonnell F3H-G
Before there was the F-4 Phantom II, McDonnell produced the F-3H Demon. In between, McDonnell designed the F3H-G, a single seat fighter design clearly halfway between the two. Air Drawing 45 presents a sizable (10,170X2920 pixels) inboard view of the F3H-G concept, showing top, side and section views. Also included:

F3H-C general arrangement (4809X2975 pixels): an "evolved" version of the Demon using the Demons wings, but with an all-new fuselage with one J-67 engine
F3H-E general arrangement (4279X2791 pixels):The F3H-C with with wholly new, thinner wings, setting the stage for the F-4's wings
F3H-G general arrangement (4851X2831 pixels): The final version with two J-79 engines, clearly a predecessor to the F-4

These diagrams come from a report dated 1953... a report that in the intervening decades had become quite intimate with a whole lot of water. Consequently, the images required a lot of cleanup... and are still not quite all that one might hope. Still, the inboard profile is quite good, an impressive piece of the draftsmans art to be sure. If you are at all interested in the history of the F3H Demon or the F-4 Phantom II, you'd have to be a Commie to not want these drawings!

AH-56 Inboard Views
Perhaps the single most impressive helicopter to ever almost make it into production, the Lockheed AH-56 Cheyenne represented the pinnacle of late 1960's helicopter technology. Featuring a pusher prop, larger than average stub wings, rigid rotors and a gunners station that could rotate a full 360 degrees, the AH-56 would seem futuristic even today. Sadly, the technology simply wasn't quite ready at the time, and the very expensive helicopter failed to make it into production.

Now available for download is Lockheed drawing 1005976, "Inboard Profile - Model AH-56A." This includes four versions of the drawing... the original full color version and a cleaned-up grayscale version (8856X3213 pixels), as well as halfsize versions of each for easier viewing and printing. This is a very nice drawing of a very impressive vehicle.

B-29 cyanotype blueprint
A full-color large format scan of a old-fashioned cyanotype general arrangement blueprint of the B-29. Originally drawn in June of 1942, this drawing was printed off somewhere around 1951 (based on a dated notation regarding the declassification of the drawing). The blueprint is presented at 12590X5402 pixels... quite large! However, as big as this is, it's half the size of the original. The original full-resolution scan may be made available at a later date, but for CD-ROM only... the full-rez image is a whopping 128 megabytes.

This release includes not only the large color blueprint, but also a cleaned grayscale version of the same and reduced-size versions of each for easier viewing and printing.

A full-color large format scan of a old-fashioned cyanotype general arrangement blueprint of the 727 jetliner. Originally drawn in July of 1961, this drawing shows geometry and contours for a 1/40 scale display model, but with dimensions given for the full-size aircraft. The blueprint is presented at 10012X3596 pixels... quite large! However, as big as this is, it's half the size of the original. The original full-resolution scan may be made available at a later date, but for CD-ROM only... the full-rez image is a whopping 157 megabytes.

The drawing is in full color and is 7566X4126 pixels, and comes with a half-size version for easier viewing and printing... as well as cleaned-up grayscale versions.

X-15 Advanced Research Airplane Design Summary
Somewhat similar to the Republic AP-76 design report, this 52-page North American Aviation presentation from 9 May 1955 describes the X-15 design as it currently stood. It was very similar to, but with clear differences from, the X-15 as it would actually be built; the lines are subtly different, the dorsal and ventral tails are slimmer, the main landing gear is positioned differently. Most obviously, though, is that the carrier aircraft is a B-36, not a B-52. An advantage here was that since the X-15 would be submerged within the B-36's bomb bay, rather than hanging under the B-52's wing, the pilot could spend pre-launch time out of the X-15's cramped cockpit.

This presentation includes information on structures, systems, maintenance, aircraft capabilities, missions and variants (including a 2-man version).

A Proposal for COIN

A 336 page PDF file, scanned at 300 DPI of the Martin-Marietta proposal document (Volume II - Technical) for the Counter Insurgency aircraft program. This program was eventually won by North American, who built the OV-10 Bronco as a result. The Martin design was somewhat similar to the North American design, but featured an unconventional inverted V-tail attached to twin tailbooms. More unconventionally, the exhaust from the turboprop engines was not dumped directly overboard, but instead was ducted through the tailbooms and exhausted out beneath the tail control surfaces, providing considerable lift and control at low speeds.

This report is packed with a relatively vast number of foldout drawings showing the aircraft in exquisite detail. Overviews, inboard profiles, cutaways, component drawings are all here. Large foldouts were scanned in segments, with considerable overlap. NOTE: the result is a very large file.
