Space Shuttle Solid Rocket Booster Pictorial Representations
PDF version of NASA_Marshall document 10A00545, "Space Shuttle Solid Rocket Booster Pictorial," March 1977, Rev D. 156 pages of graphic goodness... detailed line drawings of everything worth having a drawing on the SRB. From the late-1950's-era initiator to the not-so-well-thought-out "Challenger-style" segment joints, it's all in here. Perfect for the model maker or someone wanting to assemble an SRB using that baggie of spare parts.

"A Shuttle Development Flight Test Vehicle"
NASA TM X-71978 A 36-page NASA-Langley Research Center paper (PDF format) dated June 1974 describing the concept of a Space Shuttle Orbiter to be used for aerodynamic evaluation of the configuration. In order to get the proper flight conditions, this orbiter - planned to be a production orbiter modified appropriately - would be powered by internal rockets. Ideas included air-dropping the orbiter and firing a single J-2 engine (with internal propellant tanks), or doing vertical launched from the ground and using a single UA-1205 solid rocket motor (as used on the Titan III) mounted either internally or externally, or a vertical launch with a cluster of three J-2 engines (with internal propellant tanks), a cluster of 2 SSMEs (with internal propellant tanks), or the full complement of three SSMEs (with a reduced-size external tank). Includes performances data and graphs and drawings for each of the studied configurations.

"Single Body Canard Booster"
Space Shuttle Program Technical Integration Design Note: B-WEST-TI-0003 contract NAS8-26016
This 76-page design note (scanned in grayscale, saved as PDF) from January of 1971, prepared by Phil Bono of the McDonnell-Douglas Astronautics Company, describes the then-current MDD design for the manned flyback space shuttle booster. It also includes recent changes to the design such as going with JP-4-fueled turbofans rather than hydrogen fueled and using two wingtip fins rather than a single central rudder. A rather impressive increase in thermal protection system weight was also reported. Numerous drawings are presented, including trade study fin and canard configurations, internal systems layouts, cockpit concepts and designs for alternate upper stages... instead of a shuttle orbiter, an S-IVB, an S-II, and an all-new upper stage were examined.

Early Shuttle Doc: Integral Launch and Reentry Vehicle
This CD-ROM contains 40 pages from a scanned copy of "Integral Launch and Reentry Vehicle System First Interim Technical Review Briefing, Vol. 1" Convair Division, General Dynamics Corporation, report GDC-DCB69-012, dated 29 April 1969. This report is loaded with drawings of possible vehicles, from small lifting bodies atop conventional boosters to large fully-reusable flyback boosters with advanced manned shuttle-like upper stages, The ILRV program was an immediate predecessor to the Space Shuttle program, and was nowhere near ready to come to a specific design... thus, a wide variety of concepts were studied. This copy of the report is incomplete, but presents all the illustrations. Scanned in grayscale with good resolution for best drawing quality.

THE Challenger memo: "Temperature Concern on SRM Joints"
A unique bit of space history... the Thiokol presentation to NASA regarding temperature effects on SRM O-Rings from January 27, 1986, the day before the ill-fated last launch of Challenger. Done years before Powerpoint, this hand-written presentation gives a history of prior experience with low temperatures on the O-rings, showing episodes of blow-by and damage, and compares that data to expected temperatures of the O-rings for the following day, and recommends that... well, you read it and see if the data filling the memo, and the recommendations made by the actual engineers, matches up with the *management* recommendation to NASA on the last page.

"A Single Stage to Orbit Concept"
This working paper from July 20, 1970, described an SSTO concept to fulfill the Space Shuttle role. Written by Edward Gomersall of the Mission Analysis Division of NASAs Office of Advanced Research and Technology, this design is in the same general family as the Chrysler SERV, Gary Hudsons Phoenix and the Delta Clipper. Payload was a manned variable geometry lifting body spaceplane and a 25,000 pound cargo load. Variants include space station launchers and lunar missions. The report contains substantial data on the construction, operation and recovery of the vehicle. 54 pages.

Aft Cargo Carrier

A 22-page full-color brochure from Martin-Marietta describing their Aft Cargo Carrier concept for the Shuttle. This was a "pod" that sat behind the External Tank and allowed the Shuttle to transport payloads with diameters larger than could be fit within the Orbiters payload bay; it also permitted the addition of further propulsion systems to allow the Shuttle to attain orbit with the ET still attached. This would turn the ET into valuable orbital "real estate" or raw material for on-orbit construction. Filled with art. Most Really Good. Some... kinda lame.
